10 Hours 4 Mins | Midnight Ink | Mystery | 8/08/2017
I enjoyed this book and was looking forward to getting more into the series but I just found out Garrett’s publisher closed and the series has been on pause since book 2. Something like this happens to me every time I find a series I like!
When actress Dayna Anderson’s contract as the sassy (if not borderline racist ) spokesperson for Chubby’s Chicken abruptly ends, her bank account quickly approaches zero. With no job prospects on the horizon Dayna sets her sights on the prize money for solving a deadly hit and run.
She and her unlikely best friends—one a shopaholic fame seeker, the other a computer genius former child star—end up tangled in one of the biggest crimes to hit Los Angeles.
This mystery is is a lot of fun, it’s perfect for YA readers who want to dip into adult fiction but want the quick pacing and dynamic voice that is present in a lot of YA.
I will warn that some of the humor is a bit raunchy and a few jokes come off as off-color and dated. Especially the ones about weight.
This is extremely random but this book reminded me a little bit of the Netflix show Bojack Horsemen because of the over-the-top Hollywood personalities and Dayna’s cynicism towards Hollywood. If you want a light-hearted version of that show this book is it.
The audiobook is narrated by Bahni Turpin and I know, I know– I am so late on the Bahni Turpin game. I’d been kind of been cold on her because I kept running into her on YA and her YA voice doesn’t work for me. But she is perfect in this, her comedic timing and range of characters is unmatched.
I’m a lifelong reader who started blogging about YA books in 2011 but now I read in just about every genre! I love YA coming of age stories, compelling memoirs and genre bending SFF. You can find me talking all things romance at Romance and Sensibility.
